Sleeping with Pitties

Photographer Ezra Caldwell
This is how the four of us sleep... we really need a King size bed!! We've tried kicking them out before- Winnie is fine with it (in the summer time), but Bruno whines and whines until he gets his way. The funny thing is- before we adopted Bruno, Winnie would only ever bother us to sleep on top of the covers at the foot of the bed. Then she learned from Bruno that being under the covers is WAY cozier. Now she noses and paws at the covers just like him. We notice that in the winter she is all about heat conservation, snuggling to the bottom and pushing herself into the warmest spots, but in the summer she'll be content to sleep on the cool leather couch in the living room. Bruno on the other hand, tends to over-heat, and will get up and bug us to come back in a million times a night.

Do you let your pitties sleep with you? I think it is rather hard not too- they're so cuddly and snuggly... and persistent!

What makes Pibbles special??

Stubby dog's post on what makes pibbles unique is SPOT ON.
I love it SO MUCH-I've reposted it below.

Couch/bed/blanket stealers? CHECK
Zoomies around the house? CHECK
Big pittie smiles? CHECK
Wiggle-butts? CHECK
Face-lickers? CHECK

Somehow Bruno and Winnie combined meet all the criteria Stubby dog describes for what makes a pit bull different from any other breed. I've had a Chocolate lab and a Wheaton Terrier, both have great qualities, but there is something about pit bulls- whether they are mutts or pure breds, that is completely unqiue, and if you have had one- you know what those qualities are- most notably complete love & devotion for their owners!

Yes, Pit Bulls Suddenly Snap

December 13, 2011

Five things you’ve always heard about pit bulls and why they’re all true

By Micaela Myers

1. Pit bulls “suddenly snap.” It’s true. One minute they are lying upside down on the couch snoring, and the next minute they hear the word “walk,” or “rawhide,” or “ball,” and they suddenly snap. From 0 to Mach 90, they are doing zoomies down the hall, tongue flapping, tail tucked for turning aerodynamics. Jump in front of this joyful train, and you could indeed accidentally get knocked down! (photo by Donna J. Griffin)

2. Pit bulls’ jaws are unlike any other dog. Again, it’s true. Bullies have a singular type of jaw that enables smiling unlike any other! The lips curl up and wrinkle, and you can’t help but laugh at that happy pink tongue bobbing with each big breath, those shiny white teeth and those big twinkling eyes. (photo by Ronny Ag Roberts)

3. Pit bulls are tenacious fighters. Ever try and fight a pack of pit bulls for the couch? The bed? A soft, cozy blanket? It’s true, they love a comfortable place to sleep and would rather lie right on top of you or each other than be alone on the cold, hard floor. (photo by Janet Podczerwinski)

4. Children beware. If your child has a phobia for canine kisses, then he or she definitely better stay clear of pit bulls. Pit bulls have a special radar just for children. Smell one, and they start to lick their lips. They can’t wait to find that little kid and cover them in kisses. (photo by Colleen S Moore)

5. Pit bulls are the ultimate guard dogs. Maybe all robbers need is a little love? If this is the case, then yes, pit bulls make excellent guard dogs. Most will be happy to greet robbers with their wiggly butts. They may even show them where the couch (and TV) is, where the coziest bedroom (and jewelry) is, and invite them to stay and cuddle awhile. (photo by Cristina Falcon Seymour)
Those of us who really know pit bulls, know that they’re just dogs (OK, maybe they’re especially cuddly and goofy dogs). Now let the world know the truth about pit bulls! For a more serious look at pit bull myths and facts, click here and visit our resource page.

Doggies begin to Cocoon!

It's getting very chilly in the Northeast and the puppies definitely know how to stay warm.

Bruno and Winnie have been cuddling on the couch and snuggling in bed whenever they can.

This time of year, Bruno even stays asleep long after we get ready for work, huddled under blankets.

When I finally lift them up to move him to his crate for the day, he is so hot and sleepy that his eyes barely open!

I wish I could cocoon like them all day!

Doggies at Play: Body Language

Winnie is recovering so well! It is almost like she never had surgery at all- her hair is growing back over her frankenstein scar and she is romping and rolling with Bruno all over the house. I don't know how it is possible for her to feel so little irritation or pain, but I chalk it up to the amazing work of Dr. Petraro at Twin Rivers and also to Winnie's fierce pain-tolerance.

She and Bruno can play forever- they get so tuckered out chasing each other around the house and gnawing at each others faces and legs. (Do your dogs do this too, or do they just sweetly cuddle together?) We figure they are pretty well suited for each other but every once in a while someone carries it a little too far and the other comes hiding behind my legs.

Bruno taking his turn making the first move...

My favorite part of watching them play is the elaborate little dances they do- and the funny little water breaks they take. All of a sudden, play will stop- they will go take a drink- catch their breath, and then one will do a play bow and it starts all over again!

Did you know that 20 minutes of dog play is about as much excersize as an hour long walk!? So glad to know our doggies are getting the stimulation they need even when Chip and I are busy. If you are interested in learning more about dog body language to see how fairly your dogs are playing, check out this video:

Save a Life... Change your own.

I wish they could all get home, but it is so inspiring to see that so many have found happiness- snuggling up on couches, wearing new collars, and packing on the much needed pounds.

When you rescue one of these dogs, your life changes forever- you know what it means to give life and to receive love, trust and loyalty in return.

Save a life today (and forever change your own)-visit Urgent Part 2 on facebook.

Vacation with the Pups

This past week Chip and I took the pups to the Thousand Islands for Vacation.

Here they are peering over the side of the boat, enjoying all the new smells and sounds...

They enjoyed the weather, the open space to run around off-leash, the family and new friends they got to meet, and all the comfy spaces around the house for them to lay on.

They did NOT enjoy the water as much as we had hoped.

Bruno and Winnie both have extremely webbed feet so we had hopped they would both take to the water naturally and swim with us.

Winnie had learned to swim a bit last summer, and while she still doesn't like to swim- she loves to lay on rocks and let the cool water wash over her.

Bruno, however, it seemed didn't even know how to swim. When we did put him in the water (much against his will- but in a life-preserver), he simply thrashed about- using only his front two legs to swim.

Luckily, all of the open space to run and play was much appreciated and they ended up tuckered out most of the week, looking like this...

Engaged!

We would like to announce some other new news. Chip and I were recently engaged to be married- meaning our sweet puppies will no longer have unwed parents!
Also, as you know--we love Etsy and we even found my ring on Etsy! It was made by a Canadian artist & we absolutely love it- see her shop here.

New apartment!

Well, we finally moved out of the city- and the dogs love the freedom of long retractable leashes, fresh smells of grass, and a huge park right around the corner from where we live.

With a long hall-way that runs through the length of our new apartment, Winnie has taken to doing her zoomies through the whole length of the house-from the living room in the front, down the hall- past the kitchen, past the bathroom, past the guest room and through the bed room and back again. Bruno follows her- lagging a few feet, but keeping up the whole time - barking in a voice that I assume is saying, "Hey stop! You're going to fast and you're going to get in trouble!"

For the first week, they have to stay in the house more than we would like because Chip and I are commuting to NYC before he begins law- school in Philly and adopts a more flexible schedule. These long hours alone made them extra excited to get out when we got home.

The first time we came home late- they flurried past us and ran out into the street- which shocked and terrified me, as we now need to be super-aware of the busy traffic outside and realize that we no-longer have a quiet hallway, an elevator, and a lobby between us and the outside world. Luckily a new neighbor was gardening across the street and caught Winnie as she ran over to meet him.

I am so glad nothing horrible happened and we are going to be much more careful from now on.

From the first moment we moved in- Winnie already claimed her spot- a spot that originally was meant to be my new reading chair in our new den- but quickly became our little Queen's throne. We figure she chose it because she can see almost everything in the house from there, including the drive-way to see who is coming and going.

Our new den- featuring some of my favorite deals- Two linen-arm chairs from overstock.com, one faux-leather ottoman from walmart.com, and a faux-sheepskin rug that the doggies love to lay on from Ikea. Over-all we converted what was to be a wasted room (a dining room we would never use) into an inexpensive and comfortable reading room for our new law-school student in the family, and a good perch for our "watch dog" - aka, Winnie, who really just likes to sleep where she can see things - just in case her boring parents do something interesting- like say, offer her human food from the kitchen in the next room.

Also, so far we have seen lots of great dogs in the neighborhood- including another pit mix and a big white boxer, so we think the neighbors will be friendly towards our pittie mutts! We will keep you posted!

Pittie of the Week: Fiona

Look at that smile!!!  Fiona is a 2 year old adoptable Pittie in Tampa Bay, Florida.

She gets along with other dogs, kids and people, but not cats.

Fiona is deaf (as many white dogs can be)- which may be why she has been at the shelter for over a year - but she doesn't seem to know it!

She is a super sweet happy girl who loves to swim and play. (She even puts her nose under the water! Check it out in the video below!)

How can you live without a pittie smile like FiFi's??

This happy girl has basically grown up at the shelter- and while she's had a lot of fun and great experiences, she really needs a home forever.

"I iz seerius bunnee"

"I's famoose pibble"

"cheeeese"

Alshie Burke writes about FiFi :

"This is Fiona. She turned two last October and has been in our rescue, Pit Stop Bully's Rescue, since she was 10 months old. People pass her by due to her deafness. I know, because I took a poll. With the right pack leader she can be in a h...ome with numerous dogs. During pack play at my house she's in a pack of 10-12 dogs at any given time. and loves her time with them. She's not so great with cats. Fiona may be deaf but she's smart as a whip. She's crate/house trained, loves her baths, and LOVES to swim. She even swims with her head under water (pics of this in above video). It's time for her to find a family of her own. She's growing up in rescue becasue she cannot hear. I envy her. I envy the fact that when I walk into a room of barking dogs, Fiona peacefully sleeps. I love that when she wakes up and realizes you're there it's like Christmas morning every time. Thank you for sharing our Fi-Fi and being so obsessed with her. We are to :)"

Trade Pet-Services with your Neighbors!!

You may remember a few months ago I told you about Pet-It-Forward, well it is finally up and running and people in my area have already begun requesting help from neighbors and friends for their pet-care needs.

As I said at the time, "I am really excited about this site; it connects pet owners with other pet owners in their nieghborhoods, makes booking and paying for pet-care online quick and easy, and can save us up to 50-100% on pet care..." like feeding, house-sitting, walks etc...

Now that I get to use the site, I see how I can offer others a helping hand by offering to walk their dog or watch him over-night. I can earn points by doing this and use those points to have my dog walked in return. You can be a net reciever or a net provider (and actually earn points and cash out) or you can break even and share responsibilities with others.

You can also use it as a tool to meet new people and set up play-dates for your pets. I love this part! I sent out a request for a weekend play date for my two pitties because they are often unwelcome in the dog park but love to play and make friends.

This is what my play-date request looked like:
And when someone replies to your request- you can check out what their dogs and owners look like and see if it might be a good match! (Notice a play date costs 0 points!)

I think it is a great way to find other pet owners who will be willing to trade services. For example, I'd love to watch another pitties on the weekend and give Bruno and Winnie someone to play with, but it'd be hard to set that up with your neighbors without a site like this.

This is how the circular exchange works:

Hope you enjoy and make use of your neighbors! It ends up being a lot cheaper than using a boarding facility or a dog-walker because you use points which are equivalent to lower costs. (For example, $10 for a dog walk rather than $20.)

If you enjoy watching other people's pets- there may even be some money in it for you! Read this funny blog-post about a woman who watches other's pets on the side- and finds it very rewarding despite the strange things she has sometimes had to do!

You can also search for other dogs that are the same breed as your dog by joining a group. Bruno & Winnie are in the pit bull group, so hopefully we can find some more pitties for them to become friends with!!

You can sign up for free here.

Another Feature!

So I've been MIA for the first time due to a fabulous vacation to the Thousand Islands for Memorial Day and then to San Francisco for a trip with High-school friends. I can't wait to tell you all about the doggies I met on my trip, but before I do- Bruno & Winnie got featured (a third time!) on PitterPatter a blog associated with Pit Bull Rescue Central that takes photo submissions and adds witty captions.
Love it!!

Pit Bull Song.

"I got these pit bull blues,
All I wanna do it sniff your shoes!"

This song may be a little cheesy- but the sentiment is sweet.
I also love all the sweet pittie footage!

Patrick Update

Five weeks ago, we all learned the story of Patrick- the pit mix puppy that was thrown down a garbage shoot and miraculously survived.

He has now gained weight and is acting like a real dog (eating sticks off of trees just like Bruno does! Watch him in the video below).

He recently underwent surgery to remove a beazor from his stomach that formed because Patrick had eaten too much hair (probably because he had nothing else to eat.)

However, a temperamental trainer/evaluated expressed serious concerns about Patrick's emotional development. He has apparently been exhibiting some bad behavior due to his intense fears. He needs socialization with other dogs and some space from the well-meaning adoring people that surround him. The trainer suggested that Patrick be moved to an anonymous foster home as soon as possible to begin his emotional recovery.
Luckily, he has plenty of people who care about helping him be the happiest, healthiest dog he can be. He is undergoing physical therapy and training and hopefully he can some day fulfill his role as a "breed ambassador."

Bruno & Winnie Watch Elton

Last night the Tribeca Film Festival came to our backyard- we were watching tv with the window open when around 10:30 there was a big surprise as Elton John began singing after the documentary about him finished.

The dogs had a blast listening to it- I had no idea they were Elton fans.

This is the end of "Rocket Man" (look how tall the freedom tower is getting at the end!)

Read a little more about it here. Also attending the festival were Martin Scorsese and the Olsen twins.
