Running off leash

Every once in a while we like to take Winnie and Bruno to run and enjoy the outdoors off the leash. Unfortunately, Winnie can't be taken off the leash anymore- not since we took her to her Great Grandpa's house in Allentown and she almost ran across the road to chase a group of Deer.

But Bruno is SO obsessed with balls and sticks that he can be off-leash just about anywhere and will follow us and stop dead if we tell him to- not sure where he learned this, but it makes sense given that all we have to say is "Crate" and he goes right into it.

They love Fairmount Park in Philadelphia- a park with a few baseball diamonds and an open field where he can run and chase balls for hours.

Here Bruno is lugging around a giant branch and Winnie is rolling herself in the sand. (Needless to say they both got baths afterwards!)

Doggies at Play: Body Language

Winnie is recovering so well! It is almost like she never had surgery at all- her hair is growing back over her frankenstein scar and she is romping and rolling with Bruno all over the house. I don't know how it is possible for her to feel so little irritation or pain, but I chalk it up to the amazing work of Dr. Petraro at Twin Rivers and also to Winnie's fierce pain-tolerance.

She and Bruno can play forever- they get so tuckered out chasing each other around the house and gnawing at each others faces and legs. (Do your dogs do this too, or do they just sweetly cuddle together?) We figure they are pretty well suited for each other but every once in a while someone carries it a little too far and the other comes hiding behind my legs.

Bruno taking his turn making the first move...

My favorite part of watching them play is the elaborate little dances they do- and the funny little water breaks they take. All of a sudden, play will stop- they will go take a drink- catch their breath, and then one will do a play bow and it starts all over again!

Did you know that 20 minutes of dog play is about as much excersize as an hour long walk!? So glad to know our doggies are getting the stimulation they need even when Chip and I are busy. If you are interested in learning more about dog body language to see how fairly your dogs are playing, check out this video:

New apartment!

Well, we finally moved out of the city- and the dogs love the freedom of long retractable leashes, fresh smells of grass, and a huge park right around the corner from where we live.

With a long hall-way that runs through the length of our new apartment, Winnie has taken to doing her zoomies through the whole length of the house-from the living room in the front, down the hall- past the kitchen, past the bathroom, past the guest room and through the bed room and back again. Bruno follows her- lagging a few feet, but keeping up the whole time - barking in a voice that I assume is saying, "Hey stop! You're going to fast and you're going to get in trouble!"

For the first week, they have to stay in the house more than we would like because Chip and I are commuting to NYC before he begins law- school in Philly and adopts a more flexible schedule. These long hours alone made them extra excited to get out when we got home.

The first time we came home late- they flurried past us and ran out into the street- which shocked and terrified me, as we now need to be super-aware of the busy traffic outside and realize that we no-longer have a quiet hallway, an elevator, and a lobby between us and the outside world. Luckily a new neighbor was gardening across the street and caught Winnie as she ran over to meet him.

I am so glad nothing horrible happened and we are going to be much more careful from now on.

From the first moment we moved in- Winnie already claimed her spot- a spot that originally was meant to be my new reading chair in our new den- but quickly became our little Queen's throne. We figure she chose it because she can see almost everything in the house from there, including the drive-way to see who is coming and going.

Our new den- featuring some of my favorite deals- Two linen-arm chairs from overstock.com, one faux-leather ottoman from walmart.com, and a faux-sheepskin rug that the doggies love to lay on from Ikea. Over-all we converted what was to be a wasted room (a dining room we would never use) into an inexpensive and comfortable reading room for our new law-school student in the family, and a good perch for our "watch dog" - aka, Winnie, who really just likes to sleep where she can see things - just in case her boring parents do something interesting- like say, offer her human food from the kitchen in the next room.

Also, so far we have seen lots of great dogs in the neighborhood- including another pit mix and a big white boxer, so we think the neighbors will be friendly towards our pittie mutts! We will keep you posted!

Our pups finally fell in love

When Bruno first came home, he licked Winnie's ears for about 15 minutes straight. When he was done, her whole head was drenched in puppy-spit. We felt like this was a good omen that they were going to get along- but alas- within a few weeks, their true relationship began to show- it seemed they would play, wrestle and chase each other, but never really be best friends. Winnie usually growls whenever Bruno tries to cuddle with her and gets up and goes to another room whenver Bruno tries to lay next to her... and generally makes moody faces like this:

"Go away, Bruno"

You may remember, I was super excited when Winnie finally laid her head on Bruno.

"I guess you're more comfortable than floor..."

Well, I'm starting to notice signs that Winnie may not just be putting up with Bruno, but may actually be starting to appreciate and love him.

They've been palling around more and sharing their tent:

They've been sleeping next to each other on the couch:

Winnie has been putting up with him climbing, stepping, and sitting all over her (he does to us too-- somehow he always puts himself right in front of the TV) Bruno has no concept of his own body...
"What... am I in your way??"

"ugh... he's sitting on me AGAIN..."

But the best moment for me as a dog-mommy was when Bruno was having a nightmare (he twitches and howls) and Winnie comforted him by laying her head over him:

"it's OK brother..."

He stopped twitching and howling right away :)

Back to Nature

Saturday was my Mom's birthday, so we took the pups home to New Jersey for a day. Not only do they love going to their "Grandparent's" house in the "country" (aka suburbs) because of the smells, wild-life, and room to run, but they love the extra love and food they get from Grandma and Grandpa (which they have cut down on significantly since they came home repeatedly with tummy-aches.)

My Dad suggested we take them to the town lake, which is drained in the winter- a perfect place for them to run and explore:

Hijinks ensued:

We found out that Bruno looves digging in the sand:
And dragging his stick around in it:
And fishing his stick out of this tiny stream:
And tearing roots out of the ground:

Our First week with Bruno

Bruno is an amazing dog.
So sweet and loving, and the more he gets to eat and rest and play with Winnie, the more at home he becomes.

Bruno happens to be much better behaved than Winnie--
Here I am about to hand them their rawhide bones:
 BOING!
Notice Winnie cannot keep still. :)

(Here lies the remnants of "Puppy," Winnie's little rotweiler tug toy... he didn't stand a chance against two dogs with big teeth :))
They do love their rawhides, but Winnie can be a bit of a bully, and usually will finish her bone before Bruno and try to steal it.

Of course, like good puppy-parents, we always try to even the score.

And luckily, Bruno is starting to stand up for himself, trying to steal toys right back:

And sometimes they will just lay together and give kisses :)
